MADE IN THE USA BEADS

  My name is John Stevenson Lewis but my friends call me Jack. I am currently serving two life sentences in the South Dakota State Penitentiary for the charge of attempting to murder two Sioux Falls police officers

  On February 2nd 2004 I was shot in the back while lying face down in the snow. The two police officers had tackled me down and were sitting on top of me at the time. They had one of my arms handcuffed when they said they heard a gun shot then the rookie officer stood up and pulled his gun and shot me three times while I was lying face down in six inches of snow. The doctors said it was a miracle that I lived.

  To justify their actions the State charged me with attempted murder. They confiscated everything I owned and forced me to use the public defender to represent me in court. My lawyer made no attempt to defend me and I was found guilty and placed in the Jamison Maximum Security Unit in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

 One day while walking on the gravel path in the exercise yard I picked up a rather unusual rock. I had just started studying Buddhism and a friend had shown me a figure of Buddha he had carved out of a rock. A little later I sat down and started scraping the rock on the cement and began to shape it. I realized that if I used a little water and sand I could shape it rather easily. Then later I finished carving it with a thick leather sewing needle. I was even able to work a hole in the rock by twisting a broken needle into it. It was a lot of work, but it became very meditative. I started making crosses and other symbols. I came accross a Chinese dictionary and decided to make necklaces using the beads we could get through commissary.

  So these necklaces all started out as rocks on a path in a prison excercise yard. Making them has helped me cope with my situation while I fight to get a new trial.
